Best Games of October Review! (with video feedback)

Posted by FutureCopLGF - 6 days ago

Every month I see to review all of the games that were nominated as the Best of that month, which you can view in the link above!

As a game developer myself, I know how difficult it can be when you are starting out and how tricky it can be to tell how your game will be received by users. After all, you know how your game is meant to be played, and you can't just wipe that from your memory when you're building and testing it!

Therefore, I record myself playing all of the games for the first time for 10-15 minutes and try to voice how I'm feeling when I'm playing it, so that developers can see how a user might experience their game for the first time, especially for things like tutorials. I also try to provide some advice as well, but it might not always be the best: what I'm really hoping is that developers can draw their own conclusions on what might need work from how I stumble through their game.

While all of these games were the best of the month...

MY PERSONAL ARBITRARILY-RANKED TOP 10 GAMES OF THE MONTH

My Top 10 was (in sort-of ranked order and based on my own criteria which is some weird sense of 'memorability' for me personally and totally subject to genres I like and I don't feature an author twice even if they had two good entries so as to spread the love etc etc):

Unfortunately Ritual Bound wasn't actually submitted this month, only featured, so it wasn't eligible. Still, I wanted to put it up here because it was a shoo-in for 1st place until I realized! Ok, back to the actual Top 10!

And here are some Honorable Mentions (games that were close contenders for the top, additional games from an already highlighted dev this month, games that are still demos but promising, games that are clones of existing games but still good, applications and art collabs, etc):

Thanks to all the portal warriors that sifted through all the games to find the best in the bunch for me to check out in the first place! And as always, even if your game wasn't listed by me personally, hold your head high as I enjoyed playing all of them nonetheless as they are, after all, the best of the month!

This month we had a Bonus Game request and played G-Switch 4: Creator from @VascoF, check it out for yourself below if you want as it was pretty neat!

Oh yeah, and I also did a review on Steam Next Fest October action games if you want to check it out: there are even some Newgrounds games in there! (the recording quality was pretty bad though, big goof on my part)

I watched the parts on Mære 2, Wizard Brew and Stay Indoors.

Stay Indoors it was a bit difficult making Peanut show up consistently he just wanders around the map. I did have it where he’d just teleport to you after so many screen changes until people figured out they could just cheat by jumping back and forth between two screens to force him to show up. So I ended up taking that out. Still haven’t quite figured out the best approach.

Cheers! Oh wow, I didn't realize he wanders around: that's some interesting insight into trying to reduce frustrations! I wonder if you can do something like I was thinking with the ghost that appears traveling in the direction of the dog, or maybe even directional audio where you follow some dog barks that happen every 30 seconds or so. Ah, the tribulations of game design!

Anyway, you had a great double-billing this month, and I went back to play each game to completion, getting S rank in Maere and Peanut in Stay Indoors, so well done!

Hi. Artist, Voice actor and co-creator of Twigi's Twisted Costumes. Thank you so mutch for playing our game. It is an honor having it played by you.

The main idea of the game was that (at least from my and aapi's experince) is that if a dressup game has alot of full sets, one (at least us) wanna focus on the sets. Its like feeling like you sort stuff if that makes sense. So beacouse of that we made it so compleating sets was the main goal and the voicelines was the motivator to make you compleate more sets. And we added a bunch of useless stuff for the lols.

Tho i enjoyed making the game alot. It was good teambuilding exresise and i had alot of fun making alot of the original outfits for the game and outfits referancing media/OCs of friends. I have learned a bit for my first try in game making.

Cheers! It was a pretty cool dress-up game and like you say, I think all the goofy buttons and the sets having voicelines was a very fun motivating factor that distinguishes it from other more simple dress-ups, so nice work!

I was looking forward to what you thought of the game after you mentioned you watched the Electric Underground. I'm glad you thought the game was cool! Even if it was frustrating lol

Cheers! I'm sorry you had to watch my embarrassing skill: I may like SHMUPs in theory and love watching Electric Underground wax poetic about pure arcade action, but that's doesn't mean I'm good at 'em, haha! I always find it so difficult to 'cheese' bosses: I always want to duel them mano-a-mano with what feels like the intended developer pattern and that gets me killed.

Eventually I found a method which somewhat works for the second guy where I stay really, REALLY close to him: it's tricky to thread the needle and watch out for the arm, but it reduces the amount of bullets you need to contend with. And with that I finally beat it with a score of 7575, hooray!

Yooo Thank you!

Cheers! Tamagarashi was a pretty interesting horror concept piece and I'd love to see how it evolves in the future: hopefully my feedback gave some good ideas on where to take it, but I'm down for being surprised as well! It wasn't in the recording, but I did go back and experiment with the rest of the endings, so well done in hooking me!

thanks for playing `good` 🙏

Cheers! Like I said, it really reminds me of something goofy and youthful like Night in the Woods: the cadence of dialogue is wonderful. As much as I do want there to be some sort of hook or stakes, it can be amusing if you, in some sort of realism sense, make it so that nothing of import happens except goofing around. Looking forward to seeing how it evolves for the full release!

This is awesome! Thank you so much for playing and giving your thoughts on "Misty Hollow"!
Glad you had fun with it. It is super fun to watch you play and figure out the game 🔥🌟

Cheers! Glad to be of assistance: always hopeful that my gameplay can provide some sort of insight. Sorry I didn't get to check it out in a multiplayer sense, but I loved how cute the world was (especially the shop, cheers to @glowbug and you for the that) and thought the racing was pretty unique. Glad you decided to continue working on it from the original inception!

thank you for checking out our collab! my work on variance collab was almost entirely hosting it and making the art related assets, while ems handled the programming and quality of life aspects. I thought your critiques of the collab were great, I almost wish we could've got your opinion on it before it came out because you had a lot of great ideas! (I really loved the idea of making the randomize button a little slot machine especially)

Cheers! Glad I was able to provide a few good ideas here and there: sometimes I'm just rambling and dunno what kind of advice is gonna come out my brain, haha!

Hello, developer of ...Vincent: MotD here.

Thank you for your honest feedback of the game, the game had a short development time but I plan on updating the game at some point in the future to address alot of the issues people had with the game, so every piece criticism helps!

Some of the issues you pointed out like the "Heal All HP" card not healing full hp and some of the enemies having too much HP have already been noted.

Cheers! I was worried I was being too harsh, but I'm glad that is sounds like it was insightful, as that's always my intention: the game definitely had a decent foundation to work from so I couldn't help but be as brutally honest as possible in hopes that the final version becomes something great!

Thanks for including Ritual Bound! Hope you managed to finish the ritual in the end!

Cheers! Oh, and you better believe I did: I got back in there pronto during a break to do it all properly. My god, the places where that went: the finger chopping, the bummer ending, augh! I'm so glad I got to play this, even if it was delayed a bit from its original submission!

@FutureCopLGF I had an issue with pinpointing exactly where peanut was in relation to the player due to the map looping round that I probably could have solved but with the game being a game jam entry I just didn’t have the time. Similarly those books in the woods were supposed to have been interactive, as well as the miner statue and the office outside the mine was supposed to have an interior that would provide some lore. All things that ended up being cut for time. It was a similar issue with Mære 1 which was last year’s entry to the same game jam. I just try to cram in so much stuff then have to cut it down for time.
