Best Games of August Review! (with video feedback)

Posted by FutureCopLGF - September 13th, 2024

Every month I see to review all of the games that were nominated as the Best of that month, which you can view in the link above!

As a game developer myself, I know how difficult it can be when you are starting out and how tricky it can be to tell how your game will be received by users. After all, you know how your game is meant to be played, and you can't just wipe that from your memory when you're building and testing it!

Therefore, I record myself playing all of the games for the first time for 10-15 minutes and try to voice how I'm feeling when I'm playing it, so that developers can see how a user might experience their game for the first time, especially for things like tutorials. I also try to provide some advice as well, but it might not always be the best: what I'm really hoping is that developers can draw their own conclusions on what might need work from how I stumble through their game.

While all of these games were the best of the month...

MY PERSONAL ARBITRARILY-RANKED TOP 10 GAMES OF THE MONTH

My Top 10 was (in sort-of ranked order and based on my own criteria which is some weird sense of 'memorability' for me personally and totally subject to genres I like and I don't feature an author twice even if they had two good entries so as to spread the love etc etc):

And here are some Honorable Mentions (games that were close contenders for the top, additional games from an already highlighted dev this month, games that are still demos but promising, games that are clones of existing games but still good, applications and art collabs, etc):

Thanks to all the portal warriors that sifted through all the games to find the best in the bunch for me to check out in the first place! And as always, even if your game wasn't listed by me personally, hold your head high as I enjoyed playing all of them nonetheless as they are, after all, the best of the month!

Holy shit a 9-hour mega review
I hope you made sure to show appreciation to all the contributors to the Wii Collab. I couldn't have done it without them. LMFAO

Cheers! Yeah, this month was a doozy with so many entries to get through! The Wii Collab was definitely pretty cool, and well done on putting it together! In the video I typically only go over reviewing the main collab interface and such, but later on I like to revisit and appreciate the art.

I'm happy to see new feedback again. Thank you <3

Cheers! While I might be unfairly down on you a bit for making games that are relatively safe and simple and such and such, I hope you don't take that too seriously as nevertheless I've enjoyed all of 'em, and find that you're incredibly consistent at putting at these very solid and polished games!

Been looking forward to this. Will watch it in the morning :)

Cheers! Bastard Aliens was a really fun arcade game that really resonated with me: it's easy to give awards to big adventures, but sometimes a short-n-simple yet addictive experience is what the doctor ordered! Looking forward to checking out Politics, USA soon!

Thank you so much for checking out everyone's games! You're doing a great service for the community. And thank you for checking out Punch Monkey! I totally agree with all your assertions about it and wish I made it less of a eurobrawler (see: https://cohost.org/boghog/post/7331688-symptoms-of-the-euro), as a lot of your complaints kinda line up with what's in one of those. More than anything this project was to learn Godot, full game production and how to commit myself to actually finishing something, so unfortunately the design wasn't as strong as it could've been. That being said, I'm now excited at the prospect of making a sequel using all of the knowledge and feedback I've acquired throughout this games development and release (no promises tho). Thanks again for the review!

Cheers! And oh wow, that's a bit of a coincidence as I've actually become a recent follower of The Electric Underground and Boghog: they definitely share a lot of my thoughts and feelings on SHMUPs and beat-em-ups and provide great insight! No worries on the beat-em-up being a bit of a eurobrawler: I think everyone who first gets into beat-em-ups, including me, goes down a similar road, and I still had a lot of fun with Punch Monkey, especially due to its great enemy design. Would absolutely love to see a new one come from you in future!

I'll see the video as soon as I can! Thank you for your feedback ? and holy moly, almost 10 hours- congrats on that huge feat!

Cheers! Yeah, this month was definitely a doozy, and thanks for the explanation and everything into Artfight!

Hopefully Mine will be in September

Thanks for taking the time to review my game... I'll keep your comments in mind.

Cheers, and congratulations on Dungeon Watchers winning first this month! While I was a bit down on it because I've played so many survivors games where competition is fierce, I do think it has a lot of potential from its varied player class and enemy design, so it's well deserving of praise! Looking forward to seeing how it develops for its eventual release, and I hope I was able to provide some sort of feedback!
