Best Games of July Review! (with video feedback)

Posted by FutureCopLGF - August 6th, 2024

Every month I see to review all of the games that were nominated as the Best of that month, which you can view in the link above!

As a game developer myself, I know how difficult it can be when you are starting out and how tricky it can be to tell how your game will be received by users. After all, you know how your game is meant to be played, and you can't just wipe that from your memory when you're building and testing it!

Therefore, I record myself playing all of the games for the first time for 10-15 minutes and try to voice how I'm feeling when I'm playing it, so that developers can see how a user might experience their game for the first time, especially for things like tutorials. I also try to provide some advice as well, but it might not always be the best: what I'm really hoping is that developers can draw their own conclusions on what might need work from how I stumble through their game.

While all of these games were the best of the month...

MY PERSONAL ARBITRARILY-RANKED TOP 10 GAMES OF THE MONTH

My Top 10 was (in sort-of ranked order and based on my own criteria which is some weird sense of 'memorability' for me personally and totally subject to genres I like and I don't feature an author twice even if they had two good entries so as to spread the love etc etc):

And here are some Honorable Mentions (games that were close contenders for the top, additional games from an already highlighted dev this month, games that are still demos but promising, games that are clones of existing games but still good, applications and art collabs, etc):

Thanks to all the portal warriors that sifted through all the games to find the best in the bunch for me to check out in the first place! And as always, even if your game wasn't listed by me personally, hold your head high as I enjoyed playing all of them nonetheless as they are, after all, the best of the month!

A little bonus game that was featured this month was Boss Rush Delivery from MoonMoleGames! I try to stick to just the nominations, but I'm glad it was brought to my attention as I do think it is a bit of a hidden gem that felt through the cracks: consider giving it a play yourself!

Also there were a bunch of games featured this month that came from the recent Newgrounds Treasure Hunt which I made a post about for my top picks. It's a shame that they weren't eligible to win this month since they were technically submitted long ago, but definitely play them as they are true buried treasure!

Can't believe its that time of the month already!

Thanks for covering and enjoying the game! All your criticism was extremely accurate and many people (myself included) shared how you felt. For what it's worth I did consider putting in a "secret chain" system in the same vein as Radiant Silvergun but never got around to it. As you pointed out in your review it definitely could've used something like that.

Cheers! Glad to hear the feedback was helpful. I'm sure there are plenty of people that won't care about scoring systems too much and will just play for fun (myself included), but I like to examine them in deeper detail when possible!

And ooo, I've been meaning to check out Radiant Silvergun at some point: would love to see what kind of secret scoring it has!

bug collab mentioned oh my

Thanks for playing my game and for the honourable mention! Appreciate the feedback and I hope my next game makes your top 10

Cheers! Woulda loved to put the ancient little wizard in top 10 for just how memorably charming it was, but I just had to be a big stickler for the combat and stealth systems getting a bit repetitive. Definitely looking forward to your next game: I'm sure it'll be a shoo-in!

thanks for playing! and sorry! we've had some unexpected issues with the game not working properly on different hardware. looks like the unintentional stickiness of the walls and the misfiring water-shooters are related issues. we're putting out a new patch on friday though <3

Cheers! Yeah, that type of stuff can sneak up on you: hopefully seeing it in action was a bit enlightening! I just recently realized that the game I'm working on has a lot of issues when playing on lower FPS and aspects and so on, so I feel you there!

AWESOME VIDEO! and thanks for playing, also small thing id like to mention but yeah my game does have a fullscreen option in the "SETT" button, just thought i should let you know lol

Cheers! I did go back and play it some more on fullscreen: it probably is the best way to play, but I got so used to playing it in its natural miniature form that now it throws me off, haha! Absolutely great game you've made and I hope this makes up for it being appreciated so late!

Hey, thanks for playing and the encouraging words :) Really appreciate how you and the newgrounds community care about celebrating cool things!

Cheers! You've made a fantastic game and I can't believe it took so long for it to get properly appreciated: hope this makes up for it and you continue to make cool games!
