Best Games of May Review! (with video feedback)

Posted by FutureCopLGF - June 5th, 2024

Every month I see to review all of the games that were nominated as the Best of that month, which you can view in the link above!

As a game developer myself, I know how difficult it can be when you are starting out and how tricky it can be to tell how your game will be received by users. After all, you know how your game is meant to be played, and you can't just wipe that from your memory when you're building and testing it!

Therefore, I record myself playing all of the games for the first time for 10-15 minutes and try to voice how I'm feeling when I'm playing it, so that developers can see how a user might experience their game for the first time, especially for things like tutorials. I also try to provide some advice as well, but it might not always be the best: what I'm really hoping is that developers can draw their own conclusions on what might need work from how I stumble through their game.

While all of these games were the best of the month...

MY PERSONAL ARBITRARILY-RANKED TOP 10 GAMES OF THE MONTH

My Top 10 was (in sort-of ranked order and based on my own criteria which is some weird sense of 'memorability' for me personally and totally subject to genres I like and I don't feature an author twice even if they had two good entries so as to spread the love etc etc):

And here are some Honorable Mentions (games that were close contenders for the top, additional games from an already highlighted dev this month, games that are still demos but promising, games that are clones of existing games but still good, etc):

Thanks to all the portal warriors that sifted through all the games to find the best in the bunch for me to check out in the first place! And as always, even if your game wasn't listed by me personally, hold your head high as I enjoyed playing all of them nonetheless as they are, after all, the best of the month!

Other neat games that were featured this month but were ineligible because they were technically made in a different month but still check them out~

Thanks for checking out Fartmania! :) I already saw the video on youtube :)

Really appreciate the feedback on Scummoner! A lot of things you mentioned were planned but cut or changed due to time. We're hoping to add much of that in a later update.

Cheers! I figured that might be the case with game jam time limits, but I couldn't help but hope for more and more from the game since it gave off such a polished impression, so take that as a compliment!

Me and aalaster did our best Kitty just recommended us to her comic maker. I know it’s bad but better than nothing.

Cheers! Yeah, hopefully I wasn't too harsh to you or Kitty: it's a perfectly fine reader, but I'm just such a stickler for art collabs in particular and always want them to be very creative, so you touched a sensitive spot, haha! Hope to see more stuff from you nonetheless!

@bobatealee I second this, we had a blast making it and appreciate the review! 2.0 is in the works and we hope you get to check it out once we polish it up.

Oh my, imo that's about 5 minutes too much time spent playing Pico Rubber 2024™️. 100% on the nose with it being a joke game tho. Next time I'll make you a rubber game worth the time. Appreciate you giving it some time

P.s. I'll leave the pronunciation of me user name up to mystery, it's fun that way

Thank you FutureCopLGF! You're an inspiration to us as first-time devs -- we're working on our second game and will be sure to let you know when it's ready ;)

Cheers! You definitely had an impressive first-time entry and I'm looking forward to playing whatever you're cooking up next!

I know I said it in the comments before, but thank you for reviewing my game! I think that this is the first youtube video that it's ever been in, so it's a huge win for me! XD

I'll be sure to keep in mind the name boxes at the beginning of the game for next time as you've mentioned. But I hope that you got some good chuckles out of the other endings if you went back and saw them too. Thanks again! <3

Cheers! I hope you didn't find it too annoying that I spent so much time complaining about the name tags when, all things considered, it was such an inconsequential thing that corrected itself almost immediately, haha!

Oh, and you better believe I went back and checked out all those endings: lots of creative and funny stuff in there and I'm already slapping myself for only giving this game an honorable mention and not a top 10 slot, so hopefully this shoutout makes up for it a bit!

Thank you so much for the feedback, and even more for placing my game in your top 10 -- it's a huge honor :)

Thanks for the feedback on Core Breach. Some really great points you made! I'm making changes as we speak!

Cheers! I'm amazed that between reviewing it and finalizing the rankings, it's already had so many updates that are taking it in a good direction, such as the movement of metaprogression to be run-based (something which I don't think I talked about much explicitly but was in the back of my mind, so you're a great mind reader!) Looking forward to revisiting it!

Good stuff this month. I have enjoyed alot of the stuff here. Chefware was indeed for shure the best one with no questions asked. You simpli cannot hate a Warioware-like game at all. And food theemed stuff just is a reely flexible theeme to use and it just works reely damn well with a Warioware-like.

Heroes of Pico's school is also reely damn fun (even tho it broke my brain) and i find it cool that it got some traction on youtube. I do enjoy the multible characters that does different yet creative stuff that fits the characters personalaty and stuff.

Blue Vortex is also fun. cannot hate a good lightshow. And Tirehead even if it was dissapointingly short, it was still reely damn good and i hope there is more stuff made for it.

Kart Collab is enjoyeble. It is a reely cool spinn on the art collabs and its reely enjoyeble and i like to back to it.

I havent reely gotten around to Bergs but ill do that one day.

But i reely diddnt like the N64 collab. It is just too low qualaty and i felt like the time i used to make my drawing was just wasted. It was so bad that i just ditched the collab and removed myself from the credits. I alredy dont reely enjoy art collabs that goes in the Art Portal (ironic) but i beleave the N64 collab shoud either have an actual engine or just be a ctrl+c ctrl+v art collab made in program that is ment for comics and not as an art showcase.

Thanks for the feedback! Very helpful. The issues have been fixed for the next update coming soon enough.

Cheers! Just don't feel like you need to make it too easy or anything: remember that when I stream my brain power is at an all-time low, haha! Sometimes difficulty spikes can add a lot of flavor (though I will admit that it was still quite the spike!)

Thanks for mentioning my game, Blue Vortex! I totally agree with your feedback.

Cheers! It was great to see more games pop-up from you again: hopefully doesn't bother you too much that they are only appreciated after a bit of a time delay, haha! True art takes time to appreciate!

thank you so much for playing, again!!
i like that you went with the peaceful dialogue options when talking to Tracie, but then still ended up shooting her lol
as for the criticism, as I said in my review response - I agree with most of it, so thank you for making the video - watching someone play definitely helps with seeing what works and what not!

Cheers! Yeah, I felt very proud of myself for how I treated Tracie: felt like that was the intended best response, haha!

@FutureCopLGF nah your alright It’s normal on a collab It’s just my first time and i do not like rude people hopefully my next collab will be better, hint hint, hint

@FutureCopLGF Don't even worry about it! This is the first time that something I've made has even gotten this much recognition. I'm just happy to hear that so many people have enjoyed it! I'm trying my best to keep everything in mind for the next game so I hopefully don't repeat any mistakes. Have a good one! :D

Thanks a lot for playing the demo :) I hope that the full game will be as fun as the demo for you :)

Thanks again :)
