Best Games of February Review! (with video feedback)

Posted by FutureCopLGF - March 6th, 2024

Every month I see to review all of the games that were nominated as the Best of that month, which you can view in the link above!

As a game developer myself, I know how difficult it can be when you are starting out and how tricky it can be to tell how your game will be received by users. After all, you know how your game is meant to be played, and you can't just wipe that from your memory when you're building and testing it!

Therefore, I record myself playing all of the games for the first time for 10-15 minutes and try to voice how I'm feeling when I'm playing it, so that developers can see how a user might experience their game for the first time, especially for things like tutorials. I also try to provide some advice as well, but it might not always be the best: what I'm really hoping is that developers can draw their own conclusions on what might need work from how I stumble through their game.

While all of these games were the best of the month...

MY PERSONAL ARBITRARILY-RANKED TOP 10 GAMES OF THE MONTH

My Top 10 was (in sort-of ranked order and based on my own criteria which is some weird sense of 'memorability' for me personally and totally subject to genres I like and I don't feature an author twice even if they had two good entries so as to spread the love etc etc):

And here are some Honorable Mentions (games that were close contenders for the top, additional games from an already highlighted dev this month, games that are still demos but promising, games that are clones of existing games but still good, etc):

Thanks to all the portal warriors that sifted through all the games to find the best in the bunch for me to check out in the first place! And as always, even if your game wasn't listed by me personally, hold your head high as I enjoyed playing all of them nonetheless as they are, after all, the best of the month!

OTHER COOL STUFF:

These games weren't submitted this month, so they weren't eligible, but they were still pretty neat!

AHH thanks!!!! I haven't been able to reply yet, but i'll get around to it! Your feedback is always really valuable and thoughtful, so thanks for giving the game the time!!!

Cheers! It might be a bit painful to watch as I was a bit rough, but nevertheless the game looks like it has loads of potential and I look forward to the final version!

Always great to see you play our games! We never get tired of hearing people ask out loud if the drink has pp in it lol

Cheers! Yeah, I love how wild and crazy you all got with those rules! I loved coming back to the game and trying to memorize them as best as I can, but alas, it was hard!

glad you liked Ghost in the graveyard!

it's dumb simple and a rehash of a game I released a few years ago and then unreleased cause I didn't like it

to answer your concern about staying in the center of a screen, an unkillable enemy spawns in the center of the screen and bounces around like a screen saver after a full minute in a round!

I just went back and played it and sure enough, you're right: there is a spooky guy that spawns in the center eventually, and he killed me right when he did, haha! Man, revisiting it, I mighta underappreciated this one: for as simple as the gameplay is, it sure is satisfyingly crunchy! Always nice to see something from ya, no matter what!

Super thank you to @FutureCopLGF I'm extremely grateful for you checking out the Corn!

PRAXIS FIGHTER X and Fish Tank are amazing! The sound design in Fish Tank is awesome. Along with interesting gameplay. Classical flash game feel.

Cheers, and you nailed it on that poetry for that art collab! Definitely a surprising standout amidst art collabs.

And heck yeah, both those games really rocked. I probably should've put PRAXIS FIGHTER X higher in the list: I think it was just one of those things where a lot of SHMUPs have been coming out lately, so perhaps I didn't appreciate as much as I would've were it a rarity.

thank you so much for sticking with vatis and congrats on getting to the maximum level! your feedback is very much appreciated! :)

Cheers! Vatis absolutely rocks and is very underappreciated, most likely due to how avant garde it is. Hope my appreciation makes up for that, haha!

Thanks a lot for playing! I forgot to mention that there was a secret ending if you stay patient on the very first duel, maybe that one will make you enjoy the game a bit more :D

Oh wow, that's a heck of an easter egg you got there! I waited for a long time watching that person sweat, haha! FromSoft would be proud: takes some serious cojones to program something like that which only a very small minority will see!

Heyo !! This is the artist and designer of babel adventure, thanks for playing the game :)
Glad you liked it! and thank you for all the feedback! we released the game on February 2024, but seeing as we started the game's newgrounds page in November 2023 that puts it as if it were a game from 2023, it's a bit of a shame :')

Cheers! Yeah, I'm always surprised to see games from so long ago suddenly appear in the featured list (well, maybe not as surprised as you!) Hopefully it feels good to have it appreciated now, as delayed as it is!

Thanks for the high marks :)
A lot of awesome games this month, good job everyone

It was a great month: cheers on reigning supreme!

Wow #2 on your list! As always, thanks a lot for taking the time to make these videos - it's a highlight of posting on Newgrounds for me :D

Cheers! It's easy for me to give preference to content-rich or experimental games, but games like Driftmania are just such a simple yet addictive delight! You nailed the car physics and I loved every second of playing that and getting better at pulling off sick drifts! I imagine the game is a technical marvel as well with all the sprite-stacking and whatever Pico magic you're pulling off!

@FutureCopLGF Thanks, it was definitely a challenge to do in PICO-8 haha. If you ever want to explore the magic (*cough* hacks *cough*) instead of imagine it the source is right here:

Howdy! Thanks much for checking out Ozzy's Rockin' Diner! Sorry that it was pretty disappointing in several aspects, but I'm glad to get some honest opinions. I will say that the simplicity of the graphics and gameplay is meant to reflect the simplicity of old Atari games for the first few days, but Day 5 is where it changes gears in the story.
Although it's heavily inspired by FNAF, it's definitely meant to be it's own thing in a way. Regardless, I'll remember this advice for future game projects of mine.

Cheers! While I do stand by most of my feedback, I will admit that it probably was a bit annoying watching my review as I think 1) I read what the game was trying to be wrong and took me a while to accept it for what it was and 2) I've just been inundated with so many FNAF-likes that I was a bit negative. Sorry for that, haha! Definitely enjoyed once it got to the later days and thought it was a decent experience, and the simple Atari aesthetic and gameplay was cute. Looking forward to more projects from you!

Thanks for checking out N Step Steve! It's been interesting getting feedback from Newgrounds players. One thing I've noticed is that users here seem to be surprised that the flags don't add. I don't know what, if anything, this says about Newgrounds.

Cheers! And yeah, I was noticing a few reviewers here and there that got confused: it definitely is a pretty mind-bending and convention-shattering puzzler and while I appreciated that, I guess it can be a bit overwhelming for some. I say don't worry about all of that or feel that you need to water it down or anything like that: hopefully my appreciation makes up for it as I was really impressed with this!

@FutureCopLGF I was raised Castlevaniatholic, adding small things most people will probably never be able to see without waiting for an stupid amount of time is my jam!
