Best Games of January Review! (with video feedback)

Posted by FutureCopLGF - February 6th, 2024

Every month I see to review all of the games that were nominated as the Best of that month, which you can view in the link above!

As a game developer myself, I know how difficult it can be when you are starting out and how tricky it can be to tell how your game will be received by users. After all, you know how your game is meant to be played, and you can't just wipe that from your memory when you're building and testing it!

Therefore, I record myself playing all of the games for the first time for 10-15 minutes and try to voice how I'm feeling when I'm playing it, so that developers can see how a user might experience their game for the first time, especially for things like tutorials. I also try to provide some advice as well, but it might not always be the best: what I'm really hoping is that developers can draw their own conclusions on what might need work from how I stumble through their game.

While all of these games were the best of the month...

MY PERSONAL ARBITRARILY-RANKED TOP 10 GAMES OF THE MONTH

My Top 10 was (in sort-of ranked order and based on my own criteria which is some weird sense of 'memorability' for me personally and totally subject to genres I like and I don't feature an author twice even if they had two good entries so as to spread the love etc etc):

And here are some Honorable Mentions (games that were close contenders for the top, additional games from an already highlighted dev this month, games that are still demos but promising, games that are clones of existing games but still good, etc):

Thanks to all the portal warriors that sifted through all the games to find the best in the bunch for me to check out in the first place! And as always, even if your game wasn't listed by me personally, hold your head high as I enjoyed playing all of them nonetheless as they are, after all, the best of the month!

OTHER COOL STUFF:

These games weren't submitted this month, so they weren't eligible, but they were still pretty neat!

My ankle and knee are currently suffering … thank you…not!

Pretty solid feedback on this one, as always. To be honest, the game was a bit more rushed than I would have liked to meet the pixel day deadline.
Maybe I'll re-explore Gates of Hades again: the whole goal with this one was to redo my first web game, and in that aspect I'll maintain that it's a solid experience, but perhaps innovating more on that foundation would have benefitted the final game.
I'm really looking forward to seeing your thoughts on the new patch to Bird Tapper and the map pack by the way lol: many of the fixes address issues brought up in your video, and there's a lot of surprises in store that I can't wait to see your reaction too lmfao.

Cheers! Thanks for the insight into its development: being a remake makes a lot of sense, with the feel of it being like a first web game to me. Glad you're still positive on the endeavor as part of the game dev journey: I was rough on it, but I still wanna give you credit on having some nice enemy variety and other aspects, so I think you're on the right track.

Definitely looking forward to Bird Tapper!

Thanks for playing and leaving so much useful feedback for everyone's stuff! You're a champ!

Cheers! Couldn't believe how addicted I got to organizing gradients: just something so oddly satisfying with the way you put it together. Having said that, it wasn't too long until my head started to spin from trying to eyeball all the minute changes in hue and saturation, so I can't see myself ever making it to level 100, haha!

Firstly, seeing your shocked face when the humans first fight back gave me a good laugh, so thanks for that! ;) The humans start attacking after the 5th scout is launched and I was very worried you were gonna stop at 4, as that was the point where you kinda got bored. Glad you managed to trigger the surprise though!

Cheers! And yeah, that got me good and was definitely a memorable innovation to the genre, so big props to you for that! If I was a bit more into idle clickers, that probably would've had me hooked!

This is a nice batch of games for the new year. Aside for the multible Suika Clones there has been a good amounth of variation. May the rest of the year bring more good games.

True that! And boy was I surprised to see all those Suika Clones packed together this month: wonder if this is the genre to replace Survivors Clones?

THANK YOU SO MUCH WE DID IT!

FutureCopLGF has included us in his January 2024 (2:26)

This is a fully collaborative effort! I'm very honored the design reminds you of Cruelty Squad.

You are absolutely right that it lacks a back arrow and a gallery. Also, when you click on the name of the artist, there being a link to the profile. I considered adding all of these features, but I could not figure out how to do it. Instead of implementing features, I decided to keep things as simple as possible and make it as functional as it could be. I was terrified of having unexpected bugs. This is a fault of me being afraid of having too many problems.

@3p0ch literally showed me how to add a link to the artist button, though I couldn't figure out how to implement it. Also I was terrified that it would break something even though I had back up every single version of the gallery. From my narrow perspective it would become too complex. All of the blame is on me.

This was only possible because it was a collaborative effort. I'm very thankful I could contribute in any way.

To developers, the programming is pretty fucking limited, but to me, I am deeply shocked it functions. That is due to the good documentation that the Godot Engine has, including the community, which features a wide range of tutorials and educational material communicating the functionality of the engine.

I'm extremely thankful for your feedback @FutureCopLGF

YOU ARE AWESOME!

Cheers for putting that all together and pulling it off! Love to see all the different ways this art collabs execute on their showcase, and the goofy audio logs and Cruelty Squad-esque presentation was very memorable.

CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERYONE! EVERYONE WAS VERY GOOD!

@Aalasteir You have no idea how much I wanted to say "There I am, Kirby! There I am!" with something like this, I am so darn thankful to be a part of this collab that gets this much traction! And thanks again @FutureCopLGF for showcasing our collab, always a pleasure to give stuff like this some spotlight!

@M-kirbs thank you so much! It is an absolute honor to have you in the collab.

@Aalasteir WOO!

@FutureCopLGF yeah i would love to know how to expand the game without merely imcreasing the size of the grids. Different layouts of blocks could be one way. Time trials or par moves could be another way.

Its tough to find an awesome direction for expansion

Look mah look i appear on tv!

@Thetageist But that’s all on the commenter because you can delete the ones you don’t want to “@“. Like this one: it included you as well as all you have mentioned including myself.

@OviManic That’s true, I just pinged everyone on the list as a cue to stop doing that. (And also for the funny.)

I THOUGHT EVERYONE WAS DOING SOME ELABORATE SHITPOST WHERE THEY KEPT TAGGING EVERYONE

I appreciate the constructive feedback for my game, and I would like to thank you for playing. Now I have a couple things I wanna talk about real quick… First, the black box: It's more or less a brightness take just in case someone wants to play the game in fullscreen, which I may have forgotten to apply when I uploaded thia game. Second, the overall gameplay: Now, I have been told about the repetitiveness, and I've been working on it since. Also the risk and reward comes from stacking the shapes for a high chain. Another thing is that I plan to make the difficulties have a bit more chalkenge than what the game has now. Lastly, and this is something I can't deny… I can't compose. Coming up with something original for the music has been kinda pressuring me, and I uploaded the game without any music to relieve me of that pressure, since most of my experience is around the gameplay experience, and nothing else. I plan to release an update to fix the the gameplay, and make it more fun than ever. Thank you once again for playing.

Cheers! Thanks for the insight: I definitely was a bit rough on the game, but I gotta admit that when I came back to it on hard mode, I got pretty addicted and made it all the way to the end (almost to the point where I think you should have hard be the only mode).

And for the music, don't forget that there are so many musicians you can reach out to on here! I know, I know, that's rich for me to suggest when I stuck to being solo for so long due to shyness, but when I finally did reach out, it turned out great, so give it some thought!
