Best Games of November Review! (with video feedback)

Posted by FutureCopLGF - December 5th, 2023

Every month I see to review all of the games that were nominated as the Best of that month, which you can view in the link above!

As a game developer myself, I know how difficult it can be when you are starting out and how tricky it can be to tell how your game will be received by users. After all, you know how your game is meant to be played, and you can't just wipe that from your memory when you're building and testing it!

Therefore, I record myself playing all of the games for the first time for 10-15 minutes and try to voice how I'm feeling when I'm playing it, so that developers can see how a user might experience their game for the first time, especially for things like tutorials. I also try to provide some advice as well, but it might not always be the best: what I'm really hoping is that developers can draw their own conclusions on what might need work from how I stumble through their game.

Game Devs Reviewed: @Emizip @MrDoth @Thetageist @Ravernt @Pitigamedev @rvh86 @crow-seeds @brokellusion @RowanFuture @ProsciuttoMan @Ferociter @jebouin @WooltronicStudios @Luvdice @jacklehamster @AmphibianOblivion @shyfu @ThePeterson @kaiakairos @CJspellsfish @Tombdude @musrattus @R083RT

While all of these games were the best of the month...

MY PERSONAL ARBITRARILY-RANKED TOP 10 GAMES OF THE MONTH

My Top 10 was (in sort-of ranked order and based on my own criteria which is some weird sense of 'memorability' for me personally and totally subject to genres I like and I don't feature an author twice even if they had two good entries so as to spread the love etc etc):

And here are some Honorable Mentions (games that were close contenders for the top, additional games from an already highlighted dev this month, games that are still demos but promising, games that are clones of existing games but still good, etc):

Thanks to all the portal warriors that sifted through all the games to find the best in the bunch for me to check out in the first place! And as always, even if your game wasn't listed by me personally, hold your head high as I enjoyed playing all of them nonetheless as they are, after all, the best of the month!

OTHER COOL STUFF:

Something that really caught me by surprise in the Halloween Spooktacular that I wanted to shout-out was 9 Cam by @Mantis1. Check it out if you have a moment, especially fans of Halfquake!

Also, if you weren't already aware, Picayune Dreams by @Stepford, @milkypossum and @Andyl4nd is out and it's just 5 bux! 5 freakin' bux! Get it immediately over on steam at: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2088840/Picayune_Dreams/

And maybe check out some of their past work like Olive's Art-Venture as well!

Holy shit. I’m in a Futurecop post. This is so surreal. I look up to you for your reviews, and you actually inspired me to do a video review of the other Costume Jam entries.

I am excited and incredibly nervous to hear what you’ll say about Costume Clash. I might avoid it for days, I’m that nervous, but when I do get around to it I’ll send you back any thoughts I have.

Uh oh, you might not like how it turned out, but...

Your service is appreciated Futurecop! I wish more people did this, or even just highlighted cool / interesting stuff

…Hey, did you record yourself playing the game *after* it was sabotaged? Yeah, this is an old file I tried as a last ditch effort to revive it and it doesn’t work. I’m currently working on either finding a dev who’ll help piece it back together or learning whatever engine it takes.

Yeah, sorry, I tried to play the game initially for the Halloween Spooktacular judging (so around early Nov) and it wasn't working, and then the recording was done very recently (late Nov) and it wasn't working (as you saw) in exactly the same way as before.

Really bummed out that I didn't get to play it in a pre-sabotage phase! But of course, that's probably nothing compared to what a bummer it is for you: sorry about how it turned out and hope you have better luck in future projects.

I was thinking of skipping it over for the video since it wasn't working, but I figured to leave it, just in case it looks different to me than it does for you and you could use that data. If you have any luck getting it up and running, feel free to hit me up and I can record a little bonus vid if you like (but of course, if you just want to move on, that's fine too).

DAMN ! i regret making the ufo section so hard, i really wanted to see your reaction to the end of my game this month lol

Haha, if it helps, I was able to beat it in like two tries post-stream: in retrospect, I had a few runs that were super close to beating it and I just didn't realize how close I was! While I do think it is a bit hard, part of it was definitely the split-attention from recording reducing my IQ a few points, so I'll take a bit of the blame. I did enjoy the ending, though, with y'all on the moon and Tom Fulp being a total boss as usual!

Thanks for mentioning my game, 9 Cam! I hope people find the game unique even if it's not in the top 10.

@FuturecopLGF Somebody else told me ahead of time what happened. All is forgiven from you - it's the one who denied the game a chance at a fair review that has attracted even more of my ire.

im new to newgrounds (and making games) but ty for checking out help me clean my room!! if we had more time in the jam i definitely would’ve added a bit more to it, but i’m still happy with how it turned out.
(who knows, maybe we’ll make a full-fledged version one day??)

Cheers! I hear ya on the jam time limitations as it must be tough, but what you were able to put together was still nice. If anything, take it as a compliment that I wanted more: just shows that I got quite intrigued by what you put together, especially due to the cute style it was rendered in!

Very good review!
I'll see if we can add in some of the changes you suggested in the map pack.

Thanks for the feature! Really appreciated getting to see your feedback in real time like this. I honestly made MATCHBOX over a couple days for a local game jam and barely tested it, so at this point it's wild to me how many people on this site have played it and commented on it. Really glad that despite all the jank in it that it resonated with you! Got a lot out of it that I'm excited to take into my next project.

Let me go get a tissue to dry my tears before watching the video ?

Haha, hopefully tears of happiness? I can understand if it's sadness since I was a little harsh on it, but man, the vibes it was putting down, the potentially cool boss fights: if it just had a bit more time in the oven to smooth everything out, this coulda been great! You definitely have a knack for these cool boss rush games and I want to see more!

You're a legend, Futurecop. <3

sorry you got hacked that was a lot of submissions that got wiped might have to change your password and other information

@Tankcraft how many?

@UnculturedMutt all of them however one of them seems to have bent restored

Slowly getting everything back up: Microcosm was one of the projects that were only slightly altered where it wasn't enough to get flagged, while the rest were heavily damaged and flagged, so those will take more time. Ugh, really not how I wanted to spend my weekend: surprised I forgot 2FA on this account when I do it for practically everything else. Oh well, at least it's been a fun trip down memory lane, digging through archives and backups: some of my work was better than I remembered it being!

@FutureCopLGF well lets hope everything gets restored soon
