Best Games of August Review! (with video feedback)

Posted by FutureCopLGF - September 7th, 2023

Every month I see to review all of the games that were nominated as the Best of that month, which you can view in the link above!

As a game developer myself, I know how difficult it can be when you are starting out and how tricky it can be to tell how your game will be received by users. After all, you know how your game is meant to be played, and you can't just wipe that from your memory when you're building and testing it!

Therefore, I record myself playing all of the games for the first time for 10-15 minutes and try to voice how I'm feeling when I'm playing it, so that developers can see how a user might experience their game for the first time, especially for things like tutorials. I also try to provide some advice as well, but it might not always be the best: what I'm really hoping is that developers can draw their own conclusions on what might need work from how I stumble through their game.

While all of these games were the best of the month...

MY PERSONAL ARBITRARILY-RANKED TOP 10 GAMES OF THE MONTH

My Top 10 was (in sort-of ranked order and based on my own criteria which is some weird sense of 'memorability' for me personally and totally subject to genres I like and I don't feature an author twice even if they had two good entries so as to spread the love etc etc):

And here are some Honorable Mentions (games that were close contenders for the top, additional games from an already highlighted dev this month, games that are still demos but promising, games that are clones of existing games but still good, etc):

Thanks to all the portal warriors that sifted through all the games to find the best in the bunch for me to check out in the first place! And as always, even if your game wasn't listed by me personally, hold your head high as I enjoyed playing all of them nonetheless as they are, after all, the best of the month!

Heliox Station is the best game!

Heck yeah, that was a really great short and sweet puzzler! Happy to see a lot of people appreciate it.

As one of the random bastards that were in clocks of the bbs 2023: i am thankfull that you checked it out (even if it was a mediocre art collab).

My favourite game was Waha’s robot daze with no doubt bc its so addicting that i played it in my classes (as stupid as it is). And due to it being based on Wario’s woods it makes it one of the best block falling games. Also the arcade mode is very fun.

I also have been interested in playing Odd venture but i havent gotten around to it yet.

I also woud’ve played fnf reimagined if it actualy was playeble and not laggy as fuck on my laptop.

I appreciate all the responses from you guys providing insight and context for the collab! Certainly was interesting to see a new perspective and learn more about the community.

I liked Waha's Robot Daze a lot as well! It was a bit rough for me in some aspects despite my best attempts like the controls and progression, but I felt like it had a really cool appeal to it that I bet a lot of people who enjoy block puzzles more than me (such as you) would appreciate, thus my honorable mention (really close to getting in top 10 for me, I'd say).

Odd Venture is a really cool grappling Bionic Commando game: my best tip is that upon beating the game, you'll unlock a bunch of new content in the form of challenge rooms which I found to be tons of fun, so if you find yourself stalling out, consider powering thru for those.

Yeah, FNF Reimagined did have some rough spots in terms of performance even for me, so I can't imagine it on a laptop. Neat stuff they are doing there though, especially in the last level!

Thank you for checking our project out!

Cheers! It had a few rough spots here and there, but it was quite the impressive undertaking nevertheless! The focus on story was an aspect I greatly appreciated since this was missing in the original, and I was impressed how you even added more features to it beyond just a remake, such as that dodging mechanic. Hope to see more from ya!

Wow your playthrough had me rolling with laughter, I appreciate your constructive criticism and helpful feedback!

Cheers! I ended up going back and playing it to completion and color me surprised, I was impressed with some of the later events (and enjoyed the corny drama in general, haha)! In particular the final Tyrant fight in the plane was actually well put-together with cool quick-time-events and a good moveset that you could actually get skilled at dodging (and it featured usage of the catapult just like I thought it would!) Also cool that you were already able to patch in some changes I mentioned. Glad that my playthrough was fun to watch: I certainly had fun with the game!

Thanks for checking out the Space Vikings demo and for the detailed and thoughtful feedback!

Cheers! Hope I wasn't too rough as I do still think the game has a lot of potential and is decent, but when it comes to games that are trying to be put on Steam, something in me wants to be a bit more strict and critical. If it helps, though, I had similar thoughts on Dead Estate, but that turned out to do really well on Steam despite me, so I could just be talking nonsense, haha! Anyway, best of luck in future development!

If only my game was there for jokes.

Thank you very much for the review of Leap Hero, I had a lot of fun with your gameplay and comments hahaha <3

Cheers! Yeah, that game really got a heck of a reaction from me: what a whirlwind of emotions!
