Best Games of October Review! (with video feedback)

Every month I see to review all of the games that were nominated as the Best of that month, which you can view in the link above!


As a game developer myself, I know how difficult it can be when you are starting out and how tricky it can be to tell how your game will be received by users. After all, you know how your game is meant to be played, and you can't just wipe that from your memory when you're building and testing it!


Therefore, I record myself playing all of the games for the first time for 10-15 minutes and try to voice how I'm feeling when I'm playing it, so that developers can see how a user might experience their game for the first time, especially for things like tutorials. I also try to provide some advice as well, but it might not always be the best: what I'm really hoping is that developers can draw their own conclusions on what might need work from how I stumble through their game.

MY PERSONAL ARBITRARILY-RANKED TOP 10 GAMES OF THE MONTH


My Top 10 was (in sort-of ranked order and based on my own criteria which is some weird sense of 'memorability' for me personally and totally subject to genres I like and I don't feature an author twice even if they had two good entries so as to spread the love etc etc):

Thanks to all the portal warriors that sifted through all the games to find the best in the bunch for me to check out in the first place! And as always, even if your game wasn't listed by me personally, hold your head high as I enjoyed playing all of them nonetheless as they are, after all, the best of the month!

Thank you very much for the detailed feedback on Parachute Peril!

I will admit that yeah, the game is pretty simple. I had been in a creative rut for a few months following UFO Blocks, and mostly just wanted a relatively simple project so I could actually finish something. As an aside, the game actually didn't have enemies at all at first- they were added after Mari (the composer) tested the game and said it was too easy.

The wind mechanic was inspired by the game "Wario Fills A Water Cup", in which Wario blows water droplets into a cup with a similar one-button control scheme. While the game is clearly a joke, I thought the blowing mechanic was interesting enough to explore in other ways.

I'm glad you enjoyed the small hitbox- to be perfectly honest, I was VERY nervous about it since no one brought it up during testing and I was worried people would think the hitbox was inconsistent. The graze thing is a REALLY good idea though.

Also- the player character is an ant, and the enemy characters are flies. It's also using a leaf parachute, though I'll concede a bit and say that it probably could've been made more clear if the leaf had a bit more texture.

Nothing wrong with a great simple game as they can end up being incredibly addictive or just plain fun and not wear out their welcome like larger ones do. I usually try to give them credit as I feel like they can unfortunately get overshadowed by the sense of effort and scale that bigger projects can give off. I had some good fun with Parachute Peril (and UFO Blocks as well) so keep up the good work!

Thanks for giving Leslie & Brianne's Galactic Rampage a fair shake! Some valuable feedback there, especially as I'll be making more games in Pocket Platformer in future. I'll pass your recommendation for a "Save" feature on to the Pocket Platformer dev too.

Hope you find time to play through the whole game. (It'd be about a ~30 minute adventure, based on your platforming skills and reading speed.) It doesn't get any less meme-y though, so be warned!

Update: PP Dev is in favour of adding a save function!

Hey, was hoping you would reach out!

I gotta say, when I went back and played it all the way through, I got really impressed at how you wrangled what I can imagine is a limited platform dev toolset into a very grandiose adventure! Gave me serious LittleBigPlanet or Mario Maker vibes where people craft things that go way beyond the original intended scope. Such a variety of events, plenty of great gags (and you even hit me again with the jump/interact gag but with a jetpack twist, you ol' dog) and I was happy to see it getting more and more challenging and just absolutely wild.

I clearly didn't have enough faith in my original expectations to see it going that far. I didn't catch it on my original pass, but as an apology I've added you to the list of Honorable Mentions (seriously, I always feel like I miss something or need to shift my top 10 around later on, haha).

Oh, and I was 26 minutes with 29 crystals!

I sent your feedback to the team, we all really appreciated you playing the game and sharing your insights on our choices of gameplay, UI and sound.
(I guess the sound button really looked like a flashlight, and we did really miss that the turret should have been slower while shooting. I genuinely tried to come up with a reason not to shoot all the time, and this was the obvious solution).
