Best Games of December Review! (with video feedback)

Posted by FutureCopLGF - January 6th, 2022

Every month I see to review all of the games that were nominated as the Best of that month, which you can view in the link above!

As a game developer myself, I know how difficult it can be when you are starting out and how tricky it can be to tell how your game will be received by users. After all, you know how your game is meant to be played, and you can't just wipe that from your memory when you're building and testing it!

Therefore, I record myself playing all of the games for the first time for 10-15 minutes and try to voice how I'm feeling when I'm playing it, so that developers can see how a user might experience their game for the first time, especially for things like tutorials. I also try to provide some advice as well, but it might not always be the best: what I'm really hoping is that developers can draw their own conclusions on what might need work from how I stumble through their game.

Game Devs Reviewed: @Extar @rowanfuture @JonathanGV @just-another-dev @VasantJ @FadrikAlexander @AnderssonKev @ZeroDigitZ @Tombdude @Azeleon @Matimoo7 @BlackthornProd @WeirdRikert @danielben @Kultisti @Ferociter @JauqGames @STANNco @Jack @Louistrations @TemptyOne @JamesChapp @FsebastiamL @Rob1221 @VerilyFine @Celshaded @Vulty @plufmot @SplatterDash

While all of these games were the best of the month...

MY PERSONAL ARBITRARILY-RANKED TOP 10 GAMES OF THE MONTH

My Top 10 was (in sort-of ranked order and based on my own criteria which is some weird sense of 'memorability' for me personally and totally subject to genres I like and I don't feature an author twice even if they had two good entries so as to spread the love etc etc):

And here are some Honorable Mentions (games that were close contenders for the top, additional games from an already highlighted dev this month, games that are still demos but promising, games that are clones of existing games but still good, etc):

Thanks to all the portal warriors that sifted through all games to find the best in the bunch for me to check out in the first place! And as always, even if your game wasn't listed by me personally, hold your head high as I enjoyed playing all of them nonetheless as they are, after all, the best of the month!

Apologies if I seemed more of a grinch than usual this week, haha. While I do feel like I need to be a harsh critic to offset the fact that game developers usually will not get any criticism at all, only praise, since they usually get it reviewed by friends and family, sometimes I worry I overdo it. As usual, I enjoy playing all of the games here, so Merry Tanksmas all!

Cant wait for next month's reveiw with tge pixel day games.

Oh man, not only is there gonna be Pixel Day games, but the Flash Forward game jam as well: I'ma be flooded with games!

I really enjoy these monthly video reviews(as well as your written reviews). It allows for interesting insight. Yea, you're harsh but I think you're completely fair as well. It can sting, but it's also important for growth. I don't think I'd be doing my best as much now if I didn't get my ass ripped open for my game you reviewed lol.
I don't think you're overdoing it in your criticism and I hope you just continue.

Unless at the end you personally go to the dev's house and start beating the shit out of them and their pets, i dunno i dont sit through all 5 hours so i cant confirm

Haha, I can confirm that I don't personally go and beat people up (and don't worry about not sitting through all 5 hours, definitely intended to skip to whatever interests you which is why I put such emphasis on the timestamps). Glad to hear that I'm not overdoing it and that the intended purpose, which is growth, seems to be getting through: means a lot to hear that! Looking forward to your future work.

Thanks for checking out my game! I wrote a comment on the video replying to your input, but long story short, I truly appreciate it. I like to hear some solid criticism and ways I can improve as a developer, especially since this is my first ever game.

Cheers! Glad that my rambling ways could help, and I look forward to seeing either Taiga Voyage evolve or any of your other future works!

Hey, the creator of James here, honestly the game was made in under a month and not investing much time into it since we are working on other projects plus my brother, and I are students, so we are pretty busy. The point is that we just added a bunch of mechanics we thought were interesting, so the harsh criticism is exactly what we wanted, and we are thankful for the great insight.
The only thing I don’t agree with is with the starting story and how much you disliked it, I understand the other criticism and understand where you’re coming from but in the starting story, I feel you’re kind of biased, we made that intro based on how old movies and shows ended, where they showed a scene, stopping on the last frame, to then show some type of quote or text. But I do understand what you mean in a way, the scrolling seems a bit unnecessary if it leads to no more text so you gave me a new idea on how to implement it without frustrating people, obviously the final version will be more polished, and I hope you enjoy it this time.

Overall sorry for the buggy game, when we first released it, we were getting complaints of this should be like that and like this, so modifying the game constantly in the same day left many problems such as in the tutorial where it would repeat itself, since initially it was different, and the text was a fast last addition as well.

Cheers! Glad to hear that I wasn't too harsh and you appreciated the feedback: I understand it might've seemed that way given that it was a short work and only a demo and I kept going on and on, but if it helps, I always love a cool shooter and thought there was a lot of promise in the color-matching shooting and the boss fights, so I just had to say as much as I could to enhance the full version in the future, which I'm looking forward to!

HEY! thx for the feedback for the international pixelart gallery.

I am going to look at the review several times and take note of each of the things you mention.
I really appreciate the time you spent and last year you helped me a lot to improve the quality of the gallery.

Keep in mind that I am developing the gallery alone and coordinating the work of 73 artists from different parts of the world can be complicated and there I neglect the UI and UX a bit ... but I plan to continue publishing galleries, improving and learning .

Thank you so much for everything. and now I pass the link of your video on youtube to the artists in the gallery =)

Cheers!

Cheers! Glad I could help: I know I got a little nitpicky and listed a ton of changes to do, but I do appreciate what you were able to do with the collab and found a lot of cool art and artists through it.

@FuturecopLGF cant wait for you to see the one @pomegranite is working on...
Keep a eye out for that one. There's gonna be smth in there that I think YOU will like...

Thanks for covering my game <3
