Best Games of October Review! (with video feedback)

Posted by FutureCopLGF - November 7th, 2021

Every month I see to review all of the games that were nominated as the Best of that month, which you can view in the link above!

As a game developer myself, I know how difficult it can be when you are starting out and how tricky it can be to tell how your game will be received by users. After all, you know how your game is meant to be played, and you can't just wipe that from your memory when you're building and testing it!

Therefore, I record myself playing all of the games for the first time for 10-15 minutes and try to voice how I'm feeling when I'm playing it, so that developers can see how a user might experience their game for the first time, especially for things like tutorials. I also try to provide some advice as well, but it might not always be the best: what I'm really hoping is that developers can draw their own conclusions on what might need work from how I stumble through their game.

MY PERSONAL ARBITRARILY-RANKED TOP 10 GAMES OF THE MONTH

My Top 10 was (in sort-of ranked order and based on my own criteria which is some weird sense of 'memorability' for me personally and totally subject to genres I like and I don't feature an author twice even if they had two good entries so as to spread the love etc etc):

And here are some Honorable Mentions (games that were close contenders for the top, additional games from an already highlighted dev this month, games that are still demos but promising, games that are clones of existing games but still good, etc):

Thanks to all the portal warriors that sifted through all games to find the best in the bunch for me to check out in the first place! And as always, even if your game wasn't listed by me personally, hold your head high as I enjoyed playing all of them nonetheless as they are, after all, the best of the month!

Also I can't get this tune outta my head!

I'm your 700th fan, you're welcome uwu
(keep up the great work btw!)

That's a good idea, keep at it.

good fun watching you rage

Thanks, but that was hard watching you play my game without understanding the basic mechanics. Please consider reading the instructions next time if you are confused.

"Catching on fire is super frustrating, there is no way to put it out."

This should have a been a big clue that you were missing something extremely important to game play. As a dev it doesn't help me much when I get feedback from a player that didn't realize that 1 of the 3 buttons exists.

It's a disservice to the games you review to not spend a few moments learning how to play properly, especially when you are having a bad time.

I'm not sure why the audio is not working for you in my game. It works in everything I have tested. What browser and os are you using?

I understand your viewpoint, and I apologize for the frustration: my objective when playing these games is to try and approach them as blind as possible and without reading any additional instructions outside of the game itself because I find that a huge majority of people don't read those instructions (and you can't always count on those instructions existing on all sites the game is mirrored on), so I want to represent that most common 'worst case scenario' and see if the game manages to explain itself despite all that. I don't want to come in as an expert gamer who has played and learned everything about the game because that's not useful information to a developer: those people are already sold on the game, you need information on how and why to sell to the people who aren't/weren't sold.

You might think that it's silly and that I'd never be able to play a game without reading the outside instructions, but I find that a lot of games work just fine because they either explain the controls in-game, use universally recognized inputs, or get the player to understand how to play from a tutorial or subtle guiding.

I do feel silly that I missed the button for rolling, but my thinking is that the feedback for you is to consider why I didn't realize that the button existed: that's the big clue. I don't know why exactly, but something about the very simple 2d platforming structure and presentation of the game never made me think there'd be something beyond jumping and shooting. When I caught on fire, I had no idea there was a way out because why would I, the game just dumps you in with no context or explanation: for all I knew, maybe there was water pools or barrels in the game that I needed to dunk myself in, or I needed to have a fire extinguisher inventory item, or maybe there really was no way out.

Again, my bad time with the game was not intended to be malicious, staged or anything like that: I was earnestly trying to help by pointing out my confusion, hoping it would represent the same confusion that other players might have. I've played many of your games like Bogus Roads and had a great time, and I wish you the best for the future.

I was playing the game within a chrome browser on windows 10.

@FuturecopLGF I think it's a great philosophy to go in blind. But if you are having trouble or are confused, that is when you check the instructions. This also helps devs more because we would still collect feedback that someone didn't discover all the controls, but get to still have more good feedback. Otherwise the rest of the play session is unusable from a feedback perspective.

I developed the game in chrome on windows 10 so weird that the sound doesn't work. Not sure, hopefully you just got a bad build because it has been under active development. Anyway thanks for taking a look, maybe give it another shot sometime, I am continuing to add small improvements, though the goal to eventually take this as the "core" and build it out with a lot more stuff (enemies, upgrades, weapons, player progression, etc).

Great coverage of the games and thank you for nominating The Lesser Evil in the top 10! I always appreciate when you play one of my games and I'm very glad someone like you exists in this community! Keep it up!
