Best Games of June Review! (with video feedback)

Posted by FutureCopLGF - July 6th, 2021

Every month I see to review all of the games that were nominated as the Best of that month, which you can view in the link above!

As a game developer myself, I know how difficult it can be when you are starting out and how tricky it can be to tell how your game will be received by users. After all, you know how your game is meant to be played, and you can't just wipe that from your memory when you're building and testing it!

Therefore, I record myself playing all of the games for the first time for 10-15 minutes and try to voice how I'm feeling when I'm playing it, so that developers can see how a user might experience their game for the first time, especially for things like tutorials. I also try to provide some advice as well, but it might not always be the best: what I'm really hoping is that developers can draw their own conclusions on what might need work from how I stumble through their game.

MY PERSONAL ARBITRARILY-RANKED TOP 10 GAMES OF JUNE

My top 10 was (in sort-of ranked order and based on my own criteria which is some weird sense of 'memorability' for me personally and totally subject to genres I like though I try not to be too bias blah blah blah):

Honorable Mentions (games that were close contenders for the top, games that are still demos but promising, games that are clones of existing games but still good, additional games from an already highlighted dev this month, etc):

Many thanks to all the game devs reviewed: even if you're not listed above, I still had a blast playing all of your games! Hopefully my rambling reviews and clumsy feedback can help you in your future endeavors!

-----

Just as a special one for this month, here are some additional honorable mentions. These games were a bit sketchy in their execution for me, with Timedox and Delivery Madness having some unfairness to their challenges due to questionable controls and glitchy physics, and Cookin' Daddy not having enough meat on its bones for me. But I still do admire the effort put into them and they were quite memorable in some fashion, so here you go if you'd like to check them out yourself:

Thank you for reviewing my game in a video, that's awesome! I do take some issue with the suggestion that English isn't my first language though haha, the issues you pointed out aren't grammatically incorrect in any case.

Here is a perfectly correct way of referring to the time and place within a photograph and the part where she says "You chose to come here, you always have a choice" is fine too as I'm continuing the same subject not starting a new one, a full stop here would only serve to make it read more like two separate declarative statements rather than one.

I do appreciate the feedback though, keep up the good work!

Haha, sorry for the confusion: that was definitely a review where I was not verbalizing my thoughts properly as I had so much going on in my head (and trust me, the irony of me criticizing story and phrasing when I can't even talk/write properly isn't lost on me, haha). It's definitely a game where it's solid, but my impression and immersion was a little soured by previous experiences with very similar games that had tons of scripting and language errors as well as obvious twists/cliches leaking in and influencing my thoughts. I guess as much as I try to go in blind and focused, I need to work on it as well: hopefully you were able to see some good feedback amongst my rambling!

well, beta testing delivery madness wasnt hard. beating it in a minute and a half out of peer pressure was though. and also im glad you like savage's game. next game we make though ill probably contribute more than testing.

I have to admit that, as much as I griped and groused about it, I think I would've played it through completely as well even if I wasn't reviewing it: I'm a sucker for a challenge, and that game did have some nice charm to it! Though in a minute and a half? Woof, that's a tier of play way beyond me, haha, grats on that achievement! Looking forward to whatever comes up next from y'all.

Dev of Super Ball & Chain here - thanks so much for playing and for the detailed feedback! Lethal League style juice on the hits was the next thing on the todo list but 48 hours is only so much time, especially since I was working on it solo. I'm looking to build it out into a full game though and that'll definitely be a focus in the next version.

I'm glad you liked the physics on the ball, that's definitely the thing I'm most proud of on this game. It took a lot of balancing to get it to feel right since actual realistic physics weren't fun at all.

Will definitely be looking out for your picks in future months! This is such a valuable thing you're doing for the devs on here.

Cheers for the game! Would definitely love to see where you take it if you do iterate upon it since it's definitely a really fun prototype and, in my opinion, a shining example of what game jams can produce. Best of luck on future endeavors: I'll be here to play it!

It's super cool that you do this regularly. I'm sure everyone appreciates you taking the time out of your day to do this for us ASPIRING DEVs. When your next game is much closer to release, definitely message me and I'LL be the one giving you the criticism! <3

Gahaha, I move slow like a turtle compared to you guys, so it might be awhile unless I pick up the pace, but I will definitely await my just desserts. Maybe I should consider getting into more game jams to improve my speed...having said that, I do try to follow your challenge/advice you talked about in the NGP, just in a reduced sense where I can make sure to get something done every day, bit-by-bit (I'll leave the Stepford challenge of making something in a day to all y'all instead)!

@Primajin @FuturecopLGF Yeah of course! There was definitely good feedback in it too, I just had to comment on the English thing haha - I enjoyed the video and really appreciate anybody reviewing my stuff! It was meant to be very short, I wanted to just try and make a little horror short in between other stuff and see how it turned out, the story definitely does sort of just go 500 mph in the last bit haha. Did you get the other ending btw? Worth a second play to get it if not :)

@Primajin @FuturecopLGF Oh yeah of course! I thought the video was great and you talked fine, I just had to comment on the English as a second language bit haha. Yeah I got some good feedback from it and really appreciate anybody reviewing my game in a video! I just wanted to try a few things out in between other stuff and made it into this wee short, there's definitely some rushed stuff in there I'd like to do differently.
